A Note from our President:

This year will see the release of Windows 10 and Microsoft has made some radical changes to the way this will be made available. It seems that Windows 10 will be made available as a free upgrade for all users of 7 and 8 for a year after release - this even includes those using pirated versions of these Windows versions! It seems that the plan is to get everyone running on the same version so older version support can be discontinued to keep things easier to manage.

It will come 'bundled' with new computers as is the case now as well.

The problems users had coping with the tiled start menu will be fixed with the return of the old familiar start menu (but the tiled apps will be accessible through the same menu too) and the annoying 'charms' bar should be gone as well. The operating system will be able to change itself to work the best on tablets, laptops and desktops so should be a huge improvement on Windows 8.

Expected release date is not fixed yet but it will be in the US summer months probably around August.

HSCC Q&A session

This is a general question session for anyone with a computer question. Here are two from last week to get us started.

1. When I changed from XP to Windows 7 some of the files which came across (family history) won't open by ADOBE. Can you show how to download the appropriate new Adobe program to enable me to open the files?

Try this: ADOBE for all Seasons (or Windows)

2. There's a new little icon at the top right hand side of the Google Chrome browser. What does it mean? What happens when I sign in to Google? What does go incognito mean?

Any more questions?
(Will someone please write down the questions asked so I can put the answers on our meeting page.)

iTunes the Works

iTunes is a digital music system by Apple which can also run on a Windows computer. iTunes is useful for backing up your iPhone/iPad/iPod and to share music with one or more devices.

Setting It Up

Create an Apple ID - this is just your email address - but be aware, the password rules require:
  • At least 1 lower case letter
  • At least 1 upper case (capital) letter
  • At least 1 number
  • No more than 2 consecutive identical letters
  • Not the same as you account name
  • At least 8 characters
  • Must not be a common password
  • And you must stand on your head while typing it!

Where do you get your music?
You can buy it from iTunes - costs vary due to popularity. Albums can be between $9.99 and $24.99, single songs from $1.19 to $2.19

You can copy your own CDs by putting the disk into your computer and opening iTunes instead of Windows Media Player.

Putting music onto Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
This is called that "Syncing feeling", aka just plug your device into your computer. But first your computer needs to get to know your device. Your device can only be associated with one iTunes account.

If you get the message below you need to decide if you have any music on your iPad that you want to keep. If you continue then your existing music will be replaced by the music on the computer.

When you plug your iPad into a USB port on your computer you will see the following "Syncing" messages on iTunes. You can also do a manual Sync or Backup.

Best Speakers
Dr Dre Pill XL Bluetooth speakers $400 from the Apple Store

Apple AirPlay speakers have the most features, but can only be used with Apple devices. Bluetooth speakers are the most popular and can be used by any Bluetooth capable device.

Photo Printing, RGB vs CMYK

"Colours Ain't Colours Sol"

RGB is Red Green Blue

The RGB colour model is based on the Young–Helmholtz theory of trichromatic colour vision, developed by Thomas Young and Hermann Helmholtz in the early to mid nineteenth century, and on James Clerk Maxwell's color triangle that elaborated that theory (circa 1860).

The colour TV pioneer John Logie Baird demonstrated the world's first RGB colour transmission in 1928, and also the world's first colour broadcast in 1938, in London. In his experiments, scanning and display were done mechanically by spinning colourized wheels.

CMYK is Cyan Magenta Yellow and blacK

In 1906, the Eagle Printing Ink Company incorporated the four-colour wet process inks for the first time. These four colours were cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (also known as key), hence the name CMYK. It was discovered that these four colours can be combined to produce an almost unlimited number of richer, darker tones.

RGB or CMYK?
The colour systems used by scientists and artists are entirely different. An artist will mix blue and yellow paint to get a shade of green; a scientist will mix green and red light to create yellow. The printed page in a magazine is yet another system.

It's important to define the two different kinds of colour that we see in the world as the first step in understanding colour systems:
  • First, there's the colour you can touch, such as the skin of an apple or a painted wall. These colours are part of the surface of an object. (CMYK)
  • Next, there's the colour you can't touch, such as a beam of red light and the colours produced by your computer monitor. (RGB)
Colours generated by light are part of one colour system (RGB). The tangible colours which are on the surface of objects or on the printed page are another colour system (CMYK).
